In Missoula, we love our nonprofits. We understand they step in to fill gaps where government services cannot manage all the work. We know nonprofits meet our community’s needs, expand our interests, and enrich our lives. Despite the support we all provide to our favorite nonprofits, it is time we recognize that current changes in Missoula are challenging them in unprecedented ways.
Nonprofit employees have been historically underpaid but most current nonprofit wages are utterly unsustainable. The cost of living has rapidly risen, causing the very people who help to fill the gaps in services to experience a crisis themselves. Nonprofit organizations cannot pay a just wage because the cost of living is outpacing our ability to fundraise.
A living hourly wage in Missoula now is $14.46. HSWM wants to ensure that every entry level employee earns at least a living wage and that all employees are compensated fairly. The skyrocketing cost of housing in Missoula impacts every employee making it challenging to live in the very community they serve. To pay all HSWM employees a just wage would increase our budget by roughly $250,000 a year.
We believe shelter pets and shelter people are worth it. Don’t you?
