In addition to following the operational policies, best practices and position/mission statements outlined in the Veterinary Outreach Orientation document, participating staff, volunteers and contracted employees will be expected to:

  • Arrive at clinics on time and prepared to maintain a positive, professional and forward-thinking demeanor to clients, staff, volunteers and all involved throughout the project
  • Wear branded gear, where possible, to make themselves easily identifiable as a resource to the public
  • Be prepared by reading and completing the outreach orientation packet
  • Exercise best handling practices and LIMA/Fear Free techniques when handling animals
  • Exercise caution and confidentiality when speaking about clinic attendees/pets, other staff or organizational knowledge, especially in public-facing settings
  • Listen and empathize with clients and their concerns
  • Understand and embrace their role as a guest in a new community
  • Never use language or tones that could be considered judgmental, offensive or discriminatory
  • Value the human-animal bond in all forms, not just those that may be culturally familiar
  • Consider using stories and personal experience to illustrate a point, as well as facts/studies knowing that can be perceived as “privileged” information
  • Understand the historic trauma present in these communities and avoid acting defensively to differing opinions
  • Leave each site (housing, clinic location, etc.) in nicer condition than found
  • Where possible, have completed a Rabies pre-exposure vaccination schedule before handling any animals over the course of an outreach event
  • Not post, share, distribute, disseminate or use any photos, videos, and/or images taken at HSWM or during a program offered by HSWM either on or off the HSWM premises, including but not limited to all Veterinary Outreach Programs, as such photos are the sole and exclusive property of HSWM. Staff and volunteers understand that failure to comply with these policies may result in immediate termination from their affiliation with HSWM

The Humane Society of Western Montana may add or change these expectations depending on location, project type or developing circumstance. The Executive Director, Outreach Coordinator and Medical Director have the authority to dismiss any staff member or volunteer who fails to meet these expectations.

I understand that my participation in HSWM Programs is dependent on my compliance to the above expectations:*
