Department: Operations
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-exempt, Non-seasonal
Organizational Relationships: Reports to Shelter Manager in conjunction with Senior Leadership; Works closely with and assists PAWS team and volunteers
Position Summary
Responsible for maintaining the aesthetics and sanitation of the shelter building and grounds, ensuring the physical space is welcoming and beautiful; ensuring spaces are sufficiently stocked with necessary supplies; communicating and coordinating building/grounds repair needs; coordinating shelter cremation program. Assists in the implementation of HSWM’s policies and programs. Practices safety in all job responsibilities. Upholds the values and mission of HSWM and, above all, practices the humane treatment of all animals.
Professional Performance
- Practices the humane treatment of all animals
- Adheres to the HSWM Workplace Culture Agreement, mission, core values, position statements and principles of the Employee Handbook
- Attends staff meetings and shelter-sponsored events
- Stays informed about shelter schedule and communications utilizing established tools
- Maintains a working knowledge of shelter programs and services, general operations and training and enrichment tools
- Demonstrates a capacity to work with members of the community with a high degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality
Representative Duties & Responsibilities
Building Maintenance
- Sanitizes and maintains designated building areas
- Restocks designated building areas, reporting inventory needs to appropriate supervisor
- Washes laundry and dishes
- Replaces light bulbs
- Maintains cleanliness of animal spaces throughout the day as assigned
- Notifies management of and helps coordinate possible repairs
- Assists with morning animal care routines as needed and/or assigned
Grounds Maintenance & Equipment
- Maintains sidewalks and paths
- Maintains outside dog spaces
- Mows designated lawn areas
- Weeds established gardens
- Ensures sprinkler system is functioning effectively
- Coordinates regular maintenance of landscaping equipment and shelter vehicles
Cremation Program
- Ensures goals and activities of cremation program are accomplished
- Participates in pickup/delivery activities for veterinary clients
- Maintains cremation program records and creates invoices for veterinary clients
Cover-all Clause: Accepts and completes, in a timely fashion, special projects as assigned by the Supervisors and Directors
Qualifications & Key Competencies
- High School education or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to prioritize and work independently
- Detail-oriented approach to task/project management
- Computer literacy and ability to learn software and applications as applicable to HSWM operations
- Ability to respond and adapt to frequent, short deadlines and hectic work schedules
- Ability to solve problems quickly and thoughtfully
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Ability to work safely with a variety of cleaning supplies
- Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Ability to use and operate cleaning tools and grounds maintenance equipment
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fast pace, animal-oriented environment. Potential for exposure to environmental factors such as high noise levels, temperature fluctuations, sanitation chemicals, animal waste, zoonotic diseases, sharp objects, fractious animals and/or emotional persons. Potential for exposure to various weather conditions when working outside.
Typical Physical Demands
- Requires standing and/or walking for long periods of time
- Requires bending, stretching, frequent lifting of 50 pounds and animals of moderate weight
- Requires physical dexterity to acceptably manage the animals and perform job duties
Typical Work Schedule
This position is typically scheduled to work five, 8-hour days, with the potential to include weekends and holidays. Hours may extend beyond normal shifts/work days depending on the needs of the shelter.
