Volunteer Coordinator
The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for members of the community and volunteers, ensuring a positive experience for everyone engaging with the Humane Society of Western Montana. This role balances providing hands-on animal care with volunteer program management, fostering meaningful connections to support the organization’s mission to build opportunities for pets and people to thrive together.

Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Reports To: Shelter Manager
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit, onboard, train, and schedule volunteers to support daily operations and special events
- Develop and implement volunteer recognition programs to foster a sense of community and appreciation
- Maintain accurate volunteer records, including hours logged and skills
- Support fundraising and community outreach events by coordinating volunteer involvement and assisting as needed
- Collaborate with other departments to assess volunteer needs and ensure roles are adequately filled
- Act as the primary liaison between staff and volunteers, addressing concerns or questions promptly
- Organize volunteer orientations, training sessions and team-building events.
- Manage and coordinate requests to complete service projects.
- Assist the PAWS team with cleaning and animal care as time permits
- Attending and participating in events specific to the volunteer program and humane education
General Responsibilities
- Contribute to the overall operations of the shelter by assisting with animal care, shelter maintenance, adoptions, or other tasks as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
- At least 2 years of experience in customer service, volunteer coordination, or a related role
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
- Proficiency in using database and computer systems
- Passion for community service and animal welfare and a commitment to HSWM’s mission
Preferred:
- Experience working in an animal shelter, nonprofit organization, or similar environment
- Familiarity with animal behavior and care practices
- Knowledge of volunteer management software
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Work is performed in a facility that houses and cares for various species of animals commonly kept as pets. Employees may be exposed to animal dander, high noise levels, sanitation chemicals, animal waste, zoonotic diseases, sharp objects, various weather conditions, potentially fractious animals and/or emotional persons
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
- Comfortable handling animals of various sizes, temperaments, and needs
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and standing or sitting for extended periods
Schedule & Compensation
- Availability for evening and weekend shifts
- Compensation and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications
