Spay and Neuter Services

We know many of you are struggling to find affordable services for your pet. The veterinary shortage has created challenges for many pet owners in Montana, as well as our shelter. We strive to offer as many low cost services as possible to make pet ownership less stressful for you. We open slots in our clinic when staffing is sufficient to support the care of your pet. Please check the clinic calendar for openings in our clinic. We are grateful for your patience and understanding.

Spay and Neuter Facts

Learn more about the benefits and risks of spay/neuter surgery from the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Before your appointment:

  • Please withhold food, treats and snacks after midnight the night before surgery. Water is fine.
  • Pet(s) are scheduled to be dropped off between 8:15AM and 8:45AM the day of surgery and picked up between 4:30PM and 5:00PM the same day. We cannot house animals overnight.
  • If you cannot make it to the appointment you scheduled, please email the clinic coordinator at clinic@myhswm.org or call the shelter at 406-549-3934 and leave a message. Any no-call/no-shows will not receive a refund and will have to register again for a different surgery appointment as they become available.
  • All cats must come in a secure carrier and all dogs must come on a leash (if you do not have a leash, ask staff for one before getting your dog out of your car).
  • For your pet’s safety, as well as the safety of our other patients and pets at the shelter, we do require all cats and dogs to be either up-to-date or receive vaccines at time of service. Proof of prior vaccination can be uploaded/emailed to clinic@myhswm.org

Spay/Neuter Assistance for Feral Cat Colonies

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a program for feral cats designed to reduce the stray and feral cat populations in the community. TNR is widely accepted as the most humane and effective way of managing and reducing free roaming cat populations.

To apply for assistance with feral cats, please email clinic@myhswm.org.

Visit Alley Cat Allies or ASPCA for more information on feral cats or to learn more about the benefits of TNR.
